Imparfait is used to describe something or someone in the past.
Example , La vue de la ville pendant l'été dernier était belle.
The view of the city during last summer was beautiful.
Here, I describe the view in the past.
Imparfait is used to highlight habit in the past.
Example, Chaque jour, je mangeais des céréales .
I used to eat cereals every day.
As opposed to this, passé composé is used to highlight events that happened once.
L'année dernière, j'ai visité les grands parents.
