If the displacement of an object is proportional to the square of the time taken then the body is moving with uniformly accelerated motion as it will follow Newton's second equation of motion for a particular initial velocity, which can be given by, s=ut+1/2at2. The direction of motion of an object at any point in space is determined by its instantaneous velocity at that point. The acceleration is a measure of the change of velocity in unit time at that point which need not be in the same direction as the direction of the motion of the object.
