The purpose of adding an expansion card or board to a computer's motherboard is to add or expand some sort of functionality to the computer that it did not have before. Expansion cards are a way to upgrade a computer. Some examples are memory chips, sound devices, modems or graphics card etc. In addition, a circuit board is identified by different terms like a card, expansion card, expansion board, adapter card, interface card, add-in and add-on etc. A video card (also called a display card, graphics card, display adapter, or graphics adapter) is an expansion card which generates a feed of output images to a display device (such as a computer monitor).
