There are 3 main components of CPU.
- Arithmetic and logic unit (ALU)
- Control Unit (CU)
- Registers
Let’s see why we need them each.
ALU contains circuits that do arithmetic and logic operations.
CU contains circuits that fetch an instruction from memory, decode it and pass the instruction to ALU, Registers, RAM or I/O depending upon what the instruction is.
Registers are memory storage often named as immediate memory and they assist ALU and CU in different operations.
