A compound microscope uses two lenses to magnify the object/specimen being viewed (near the stage of the microscope). These two lenses include the objective lens and the eyepiece lens (also known as the ocular lens).

Ordinary light microscopes are equipped with three objective lenses (5 ×/10 ×, 40 ×, and 90/100 ×), and two ocular (5 ×, 10 ×) lenses. The ocular lens, or eyepiece lens, is the one that you look through at the top of the microscope. The purpose of the ocular lens is to provide a re-magnified image for you to see when light enters through the objective lens. The ocular lens is generally 10- or 15-times magnification.
