The distance between two polynucleotide chains in DNA remain almost same because it follow the point that purine always connect with pyamidrine by hydrogen bond.

Also,the nitrogenous bases are arranged in a way such that purines are always opposite to pyrimidines and hence a constant pairing with equal intervals in between is present.
