Zamindari System was introduced by Cornwallis in 1793 through the Permanent Settlement Act and It was introduced in the provinces of Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, and Varanasi. Zamindars were recognized as the owner of the land and were given the rights to collect the rent from the peasants. The system of landholding and tax collection by zamindars (in British India) the office or territory held or administered by a zamindar. (in Mogul India) the system of collecting farm revenue, a fixed sum based on the assigned district.
