The earth is surrounded by an envelope of air known as the atmosphere. This atmospheric air extends up to 300 kilometre above the earth’s surface, and iclings to the earth due to gravity. The atmospheric air exerts a force on all the objects in the atmosphere and on the earth. The force or thrust exerted by the atmospheric air on a unit area is defined as atmospheric pressure. The approximate value of atmospheric pressure on the earth’s surface is 1.013 x 105 Pa. The atmospheric pressure at a point is the same in all directions.
