650 million yrs ago Gondwana existed as a giant southern amalgamated mass of a supercontinent, which is roughly centered around present day Antarctica. As the centuries passed, India pushed Northwards, buckling into Asia and thereby creating the Himalayas. South America went on to join North America, thereby opening up the Drake passage, to create a frigid and cold Antarctica at the bottom of the world. The circumpolar current has rendered Antarctica cold and barren.
