"Split is generally used as a contemporary name for a town or city, it is just another synonym for the term city.
It was renamed as Spalatum by the Romans, which later resulted into Spalatro back in the ancient times.
For the Italians, the name Spalato was used and after a short connection with the Spljet, the name once again transformed to Split.
