Structural Name Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Ribonucleic Acid (RNA)
Function DNA is a medium of long-term storage and transmission of genetic information. RNA transfers the genetic code needed for the creation of proteins from the nucleus to the ribosome.
Structure DNA is a double- stranded molecule. It has a long chain of nucleotides. RNA is a single-stranded molecule in most of its biological roles. It has a shorter chain of nucleotides.
Bases/Sugars

DNA is a long polymer with a deoxyribose and phosphate backbone.

DNA has four different bases:

  • Adenine (A)
  • Guanine (G)
  • Cytosine (C)
  • Thymine (T)

RNA is a shorter polymer with a ribose and phosphate backbone.

RNA has four different bases:

  • Adenine (A)
  • Guanine (G)
  • Cytosine (C)
  • Uracil (U)
Pairing of Bases

A-T (Adenine-Thymine)

G-C (Guanine-Cytosine)

A-U (Adenine-Uracil)

G-C (Guanine-Cytosine)
