STDs may cause serious, life-threatening complications including cancers, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous abortions, stillbirth, low birth weight, neurologic damage, and death. Women and adolescents are disproportionately affected by STDs and their sequelae. Some STIs can spread into the womb (uterus) and fallopian tubes and cause PID. This can lead to both infertility and tubal pregnancy. STIs in women, especially HPV infection, also may lead to cervical and **** cancer. Men can also get penile and **** cancer from HPV infection.
