There are 16 essential elements, out of which carbon and oxygen are obtained from air, hydrogen from water and remaining 13 elements are supplied by soil. These essential elements are divided into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. Amongst the thirteen nutrients, six are required in large quantities and are therefore called macro-nutrients. The other seven nutrients are used by plants in small quantities and are therefore called micro-nutrients.
