A compound is a pure substance composed of two or more elements combined chemically in a fixed proportion by mass. Water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen in a fixed proportion. A compound is formed when two or more elements combine chemically by accepting, donating or by sharing electrons. Water is formed when an Hydrogen ion (H+) combines with an hydroxide ion(OH-).
