The chemical properties of elements depends upon the number of valence electrons in their atoms. Elements having same number of valence electrons in their atoms shows similar properties. For example alkali metals like lithium, sodium and potassium have same number of electron in their valence shell (i.e. 1) so they show similar properties.
In the similar way elements having different number of valence electrons show different properties. For example, sodium has 1 valence electron and chlorine has 7 valence electrons so they differ in their chemical properties.
