Characteristics of a Sound Wave:

A sound wave is described by the following characteristics:

i. Frequency: The  number  of  complete  oscillations  per  second  is  called  the frequency (ν)  of  the  sound  wave.  The unit of frequency is hertz (Hz).

ii. Amplitude: The  magnitude  of  maximum  disturbance  in  the  medium  on  either  side  of  the  mean  position  is  called the amplitude (A). The amplitude of a wave is the same as the amplitude of the vibrating body producing the wave. The loudness or softness of a sound is determined basically by its amplitude which depends upon the force with which an object is made to vibrate.

iii. Speed: The distance travelled by a wave in one second is called the velocity or speed of the wave.
