Various social factors are contributing towards high birth rate in India. Social factors such as universality of marriage, early marriage, illiteracy, religious and social superstitions, joint family system and lack of family planning are highly responsible for this high rate of growth of population in India.

Reason for population explosion-

  1. Better medical facilities- Better medical facilities have resulted in fall of death rate.
  2. Lack of education and awareness- This is a major factor since people become prey to ignorance
  3. Religion- For some people, family planning is against the norms set by their religion.
  4. Control over epidemics- Various medical technologies has made it possible to fight against epidemics.
  5. Sanitary conditions- There is a lot of improvement in sanitary conditions which led to increase in population.

  1. Rise in birth rate: There has been an increase in the birth rate because of many reasons such as poverty, illiteracy, improved medical facilities, religious and social beliefs and early marriage.
  2. Decline in death rate: This has been one of the fundamental causes of overpopulation. It is due to advancements in medicine; better control and management of diseases, famines and epidemics; improvement in the public health and sanitation techniques; spread of education; decline in killer diseases and immunisation programmes initiated by the government.
  3. Migration: Inhabitants from various parts of the world migrate to different countries at different times and settle over there. This makes the country overly populated.
  4. Lack of education: It is another important cause of overpopulation. Uneducated people do not understand the harmful effects of overpopulation and thus do not find the need to prevent the excessive growth of population.
