Genetic maps are species-specific and comprised of genomic markers and/or genes and the genetic distance between each marker. These distances are calculated based on the frequency of chromosome crossovers occurring during meiosis, and not on their physical location on the chromosome. Alfred Sturtevant was a student of Morgan who mapped the positions of genes on a chromosome by using the frequency of recombination between the gene pairs present on the same chromosome. This process of mapping the gene positions was termed as 'gene mapping'.
