Lactational amenorrhea is based on the principle that during the period of intense lactation after parturition, the menstrual cycle or ovulation does not occur.
It has been noticed that during the period of intense lactation after the parturition, the mother does not undergo menstruation and ovulation so the chances of conception are nearly nill. It also has no side effects but is effective only upto a maximum period of six months after parturition.
