Tranquilizer is a medicinal drug taken to reduce tension or anxiety. The principal minor tranquilizers are the benzodiazepines, among which are diazepam (Valium), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), and alprazolam (Xanax). These drugs have a calming effect and eliminate both the physical and psychological effects of anxiety or fear. Tranquilizers function in the body by depressing the central nervous system, inducing a sedation-like state. ... Major tranquilizers are also referred to as antipsychotics since they are primarily used to treat mental disorders, such as schizophrenia.
