Corpus luteum, yellow hormone-secreting body in the female reproductive system. It is formed in an ovary at the site of a follicle, or sac, that has matured and released its ovum, or egg, in the process known as ovulation.
Functions of corpus lectum:
- It secretes a small amount of estradiol and much of progesterone. Through feedback, progesterone inhibits the secretion of FSH-RH from the hypothalamus to prevent the occurrence of next menstrual cycle,
- It also secretes relaxin hormones.
