This question is based on the short story 'The Last Lesson' by Alphonse Daudet. M. Hamel, the French teacher, partly blamed himself for neglect of learning of French on the part of boys like Franz.
He often sent his students to water his plants and took holidays whenever he wanted to go fishing.
He also blamed the people of Alsace for not giving due attention to their native language and putting off learning till the following day. He blamed them for not being bothered enough to have their children learn their native language, French and opting to put them to work on their farms or at their mills instead.
