Charley who was distress with fear , insecurity, worry of modern world. Wanted to associate himself with his past memories and wanted to live relaxe and free. and through the thrid level he could interveaen his fantasy with reality .. I hope this would help

Yes ...because he was not able to cope up with the unhappiness ,worries ,wars,and woes of his time ......he wanted to live a happylife.....thats why he mixed fantasy and reality to create the third level Hope it helps???
