Heredity involves traits that are passed down from parents to their children biologically through genes. Environment refers to one's surroundings. In psychology, there is an ongoing debate about how much heredity and environment play on the development of a person's personality and behavior. Identical twins who are raised apart from one another are the ideal subjects for experiments to determine the different roles that heredity and environment play on characteristics such as intelligence. This is because identical twins raised apart still have the same genetic makeup, but were raised in different environments.
