Let the number be x
According to the question,
{tex}\frac{1}{2}\left( {x - \frac{1}{2}} \right) = \frac{1}{8}{/tex}
∴ {tex}\frac{1}{2}\left( {\frac{{2x - 1}}{2}} \right) = \frac{1}{8}{/tex}
∴ {tex}\frac{{2x - 1}}{4} = \frac{1}{8}{/tex}
∴ {tex}\frac{{2x - 1}}{4} \times 8 = \frac{1}{8} \times 8{/tex}. . . . [Multiplying both sides by 8]
∴ (2x – 1) 2 = 1
∴ 4x – 2 = 1
∴ 4x = 1 + 2 . . . . [Transposing – 2 to R.H.S.]
∴ 4x = 3
∴ {tex}x = \frac{3}{4}{/tex}. . . . [Dividing both sides by 4]
Hence, the desired number is {tex}\frac{3}{4}{/tex}.
Verification
{tex}\frac{1}{2}\left( {\frac{3}{4} - \frac{1}{2}} \right){/tex}
{tex} = \frac{1}{2}\left( {\frac{{3 - 2}}{4}} \right){/tex}
{tex} = \frac{1}{2}\left( {\frac{1}{4}} \right){/tex}
{tex} = \frac{1}{8}{/tex}
