Iodine is a chemical element with the symbol I and atomic number 53. It exists as a lustrous, purple-black non-metallic solid at standard conditions.It is employed in medicine to monitor thyroid gland functioning, to treat goitre and thyroid cancer, and to locate tumours of the brain and of the liver. It is also used in investigations to trace the course of compounds in metabolism. Several iodine compounds are used as contrast mediums in diagnostic radiology. In aqueous solution even minute amounts of iodine in the presence of starch produce a blue-black colour.
