Kingdom Animalia is subdivided into phyla and it starts from phylum Porifera. Members of this phylum are commonly known as sponges. They are generally marine. These are primitive multicellular animals and have a cellular level of organization. Sponges have a water transport system. They have pores on the surface of their body called Ostia from where water enters their body and leaves from a comparatively large pore called the osculum. They possess intracellular digestion. Their body is supported by a skeleton made up of spices or spongin fibres. Sexes are separate i. e., they are hermaphrodite. Fertilization is internal and development is indirect having a larval stage which is morphologically distinct from the adult.
Examples of sponges are:sycon, spongilla and euspongia
