Let the denominator of the fraction be x then, numerator is x - 2
and the fraction becomes {tex} = \frac{{x - 2}}{x}{/tex}
when 1 is added to the denominator, the fraction becomes {tex}\frac{1}{2}{/tex}
So, {tex}\frac{{x - 2}}{{x + 1}} = \frac{1}{2}{/tex}
By cross multiplication, we have
2(x - 2) = x + 1
2x - 4 = x + 1
2x - x = 1 + 4
{tex}\therefore {/tex} x = 5
So, the fraction is {tex}\frac{{x - 2}}{x} = \frac{{5 - 2}}{5}{/tex}
i.e. {tex} = \frac{3}{5}{/tex}
