There is no prescribed format for short fiction, indeed for any fiction. Writing fiction, like writing essays, is free form; you can chose to structure it any way you want.
A good story must have following format or structure:
Title: Should be catchy. Many a times readers try to guess what the story is about through its title.
The Hook ( A good and catchy introduction): The beginning lines are very important because the aim of the story teller is to catch the reader’s attention right from the beginning. It is best to jump right into an action.
The Body or the main part of the story: It should have the following characteristics:-
> Desire: The story teller creates a protagonist(the main character) of his story to achieve a goal.
> Conflict: The events in the story gradually build up towards some difficulty or a crisis or obstacles which the character must face in order to achieve his/her goals.
> Challenge and Obstacles: The protagonist must face obstacles and must face said backs throughout the story before he/she can achieve his/her goals
> Climax: The story must include a turning point where his/her difficulties reach a peak. It may be a situation which creates problems.
Resolution or Conclusion: This is the final part of the story in which the protagonist or the main character is able to resolve his/her problem. Be sure to make your ending logical, believable and memorable. The ending could be both positive or negative.
