By lossing the valance shell. If its has less than 4 i.e 1,2,3 then their valancy is same and if its valancy is more than 4 then subtract it from 8 and you will get valancy

There are two ways to find mainly : For Metal and non-metals . FOR METALS VALENCY = NO OF VALENCE ELECTRONS. FOR NON-METALS VALENCY = 8 MINUS NO OF VALENCE ELECTON

By splitting the atomic no. into shells K L M N. For eg. the atomic no. of hydrogen is 1 first shell can contain 2 atoms but hydrogen has one atom so it must gain an electron therefore the valency of hydrogen is 1
