The acidic strength of phenols is affected by the presence of substituents on the ring.
An electron-withdrawing group increases the acidic strength by greater dispersal of the negative charge on the phenoxide ion by inductive effect (-I) or by resonance (-R) effect.
An electron-donating group decreases the acidic strength due to (+I) or (+R) or both.
Halogens have +R and -I effects, but the -I effect is more dominant.
Therefore, all halophenols are more acidic(except p-fluorophenol) than phenol itself.
