    • The menstrual cycle is complex and controlled by many different glands and the hormones that these glands produce.
    • The four phases of the menstrual cycle are menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase.
    • The first half of the ovarian cycle is the follicular phase shown in Figure 1. Slowly rising levels of FSH and LH cause the growth of follicles on the surface of the ovary. This process prepares the egg for ovulation. ... After about five days, estrogen levels rise and the menstrual cycle enters the proliferative phase. The cycle comprises a follicular phase of 12-14 days, a periovulatory phase of approximately 3 days, and luteal phase of 14-16 days. In the absence of pregnancy, the luteal phase is concluded with regression of the corpus luteum and menses. A single, dominant follicle develops.
