The weather outside was warm and bright with birds chirping on the edge of the woods and prussian soldiers marching at the back of the field. This tempted Franz to not go to school as the weather was ideal for playing. Also he had not learned the rules of participles which M Hamel was going to ask in the school that day. He was late for school and feared being scolded.
