गांधी जी से मिलने से पहले महादेव जी सरकार के अनुवाद विभाग में नौकरी करते थे।
इन्होंने अपने विशेष मित्र नरहरि भाई के साथ वकालत पढ़ी थी और दोनों ने ही अहमदाबाद में वकालत भी प्रारंभ की थी। महादेव जी ने वकालत छोड़ दी थी क्योंकि वकालत में झूठे पक्ष के व्यक्ति को भी किसी न किसी तरीके से जिताने की कोशिश करनी होती है । उन्हें यह पसंद नहीं था।
