Ranga is a boy who had gone to Bangalore for higher education. It was a rare occurrence in the village. Ranga came back acquiring education, but at the same time he did not discard his religion or traditional good manners. Even after the Bangalore education, he still touched the elders' feet while greeting them.
But a change in the outlook is inevitable after having educated in a big city. As a result, Ranga came with a whole lot of modern ideas about life and marriage. He wanted to get married to a sufficiently old girl, so that they will not have a communication gap. He wanted a love marriage in which the couple knows each other thoroughly.
But his neighbour and the narrator of the story is determined to get him married in the conventional way and settled in their own village. The innocent Ranga is easily manipulated into marrying, contrary to his modern ideas. This shows that the modernity is just superficial and Ranga is a boy who is deeply influenced by conventions.
