Gandhi ji went to champaran to alleviate the distress of thousands of poor peasants. He sought the support of every section of society to make the champaran movement a great success. Their spontaneous demonstration in thousands, around the courthouse ,shook the British govt.It was the beginning of their liberation from fear of British rule.Gandhi ji didn't get the expected support from the lawyers from Bihar. Gandhi ji asked what they would do if he was sentenced to prison. The answer was quite discouraging. A senior lawyer told that if Gandhi ji went to jail,they would go home. What about the injustice to the sharecroppers, Gandhi ji asked.The lawyers felt ashamed and thought among themselves. All the lawyers went back to Gandhi ji . They assured him that they were ready to follow him into jail . It was a turning point in the movement. Gandhi ji emboldened.He declared, "The battle of champaran is won" .
