Applications of Isotopes:

 

  1. Radioactive isotopes are used in nuclear reactors as a fuel. The nuclear reactors are used to generate electricity.
  2. Uranium-235 isotope is the fuel of choice for nuclear power plants.They are also used as diagnostic tools in medicine.
  3. Cobalt-60 is the isotope of choice for radiotherapy.
  4. Phosphorus-30 is used in the treatment of leukemia or blood cancer.
  5. Iodine-131 radioisotope, used as a 'tracer', is injected into the body to check the activity of the thyroid gland. It helps in detecting the amount of iodine taken up by the thyroid gland. It is an important tool in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as goitre.
