Compounds which are produced by the combination of metals and non-metals contain charged species known as ions. A negatively charged ion is called an anion and a positively charged ion is known as a cation. Examples of ionic compounds are sodium chloride and calcium oxide. Atoms of different elements combine together in definite proportion to form molecules of compounds. Examples — ammonia, water and carbon dioxide.
