Sound waves are called mechanical waves because they need a medium to travel through.
Electromagnetic waves can travel through space(without medium), whereas sound waves cannot.
Sound waves always do need a medium, the medium can be different like air, water, metal(solid), but the presence of medium is a must for sound waves that is why they are called mechanical waves.
