In some plants like desert plants, epidermis has a thick waxy coating of cutin on its outer surface whereas cork cells have a chemical called suberin in their walls that makes them impervious to gases and water. Hence, cutin is a waxy substance that protects the leaves whereas suberin allows the exchange of gases and water.
