'the dear' means our beloved one and 'departed' means dead or gone away. In the drama 'the dear departed' the title is refered to Mr. Abel as he was supposed as dead. But in reality he was alive and was not dear to his daughters. His daughters used to hate him and none of them wanted to keep Mr. Abel with them.
