If in a aqueous of week electrolyte, a strong electrolyte is added having an ion common with week electrolyte then the dissociation of week electrolyte decreases. The effect by which dissociation of week electrolyte decreases is known as common ion effect. For example:- In aqueous solution of CH3COOH(a week electrolyte), a small amount of CH3COONA(strong electrolyte) is added. Due to presence of common ion CH3COO- the concentration of CH3COOH decreases. CH3COOH--------------->CH3COO- +H^+ CH3COONA----------------->CH3COO- + H^+
