The build-up to the actual mishap occurring of the snake curling around his shoulder itself is not a very comfortable one, what with an unlit old and small room and a kerosene lamp to provide the lighting etc. It could scare anyone. And if someone is used to such surroundings as this character claims he is, then the story may be different. The worse fearful situation would be if you are already afraid of darkness and rats making noises and then a snake attacks you, your heartbeat could stop. You must be one brave person to endure such moments.
