shielding effect describes the balance between the pull of electrons on valence electrons and the repulsion forces from inner electrons. The shielding effect explains why valence shell electrons are more easily removed from the atom. The effect also explains atomic size. The more shielding, the further the valence shell can spread out and the bigger atoms will be.

Electron gain enthalpy of an element is the energy released when a neutral isolated gaseous atom accepts an extra electron to form the gaseous negative Ion i.e. anion. We can denote it by Δ egH. Greater the amount of energy released in the above process, higher is the electron gain enthalpy of the element.
