Jack was caught in an ugly middle position because on one hand he has to increase the bed time story tht he used to tell her daughter Jo because jo was being concious nd jack dont like females to take things for granted nd wants to teach her daughter a moral...so he had to enlarge the story nd had to chng the end of th story...on the other side because of enlarging the story he had became late to help her pregnant wife...this is called as an ugly middle position tht on one hand he cant leave the story untold...nd on the other he cant ignore helping her pregnant wife because of th story...hole it is cleared riya...?

Jack feel that he has caught in an ugly middle position because he has been stuck between two situation, 1. the imaginary world - in this situation, Jack was telling imaginary story to his daughter Jo .... 2. the real world - this situation was real, in which his wife was pregnant and she was painting the room, Jack wanted to help his wife but he can't.
