Nicola and Jacopo are the two 'gentlemen' of Verona. Nicola, aged 13, is the elder brother of jacopo aged 12. Both of them are extremely sincere, devoted and self-sacrificing. They are ready to do anything to save their sister Lucia who is afficted with tuberculosis. They both were shabby Nicola was more matured one.

There is not much difference between the personality of both the brothers. The elder one was a little more proud and self respecting. When the narrator offered help, Jacopo readily accepted it whereas Nicola was reluctant to accept.
