he idiot box is a term that sparked one season of TV comedy series and a Comedy club in North Carolina. However, the term ‘Idiot Box’ refers to people who react to or are attracted to television in unintelligent ways. Specifically, people believe far too much about TV. Additionally, people find themselves watching shows for long periods of time that offer no benefit to them other than spending their time. Being unproductive is often considered ‘stupid’ or ‘idiotic’ by many people. Hence, the TV is ‘an idiot box’, so to speak. Personally, I feel the term is used to shame people into being more productive and more accountable for things they willingly believe. While this approach is sometimes helpful, it is a very negative style of motivation. I prefer the positive style. In my opinion, the positive style is more work, but yields a longer term and much more effective benefit. A more positive style would be educating people. Help people see where TV is misleading them so they can better understand how they are misled. Teach people fun and interactive ways to be productive that specifically interest them. Help them to see why productivity is better for them and those around them. In short, I feel the ‘Idiot Box’ term is a way of bullying people into productivity and I strongly encourage people to take the time to educate effectively instead of bullying.
