ice floats on water because i)ice have vacant space inside which increases the volume and reduces the density of the ice and making it lighter than water. ii)the other reason is that the tendancy of a less dense substance like ice to rise and float in more dense liquid like water,is called buoyancy. buoyancy- the force with which a more dense fluid pushes a less dense substance upward
