After seeing the snakes at the first time, the poet thought it as a guest and was admiring it's beauty. He initially liked the snake so much. But after some time the voices of his education told him that a snake is venomous and it can't be admired and must be killed.
These two situations of embracing the snake at a point and then the human voice inside him to kill him had put the poet in a dilemma whether he should kill him or gaze him.
