Let us assume on contradiction thatunder root 5 is a rational no. =) there exist 2 positive rational no. a and b such that Under root 5=a/b (Square both sides) 5=a^2/b^2 =)a^2=5b^2__________(1) =)5 divides a^2 =)5 divides a (by theorem)_________(2) =)a=5c( for any integer c) =)a^2=25c^2 =)5b^2=25c^2(from (1)) .=) b^2=5c^2 =)5 divides b^2 =) 5 divides b (by theorem)_______(3) From (2)and (3) 5 is a common factor of a and b. This contradicts our assumption :.under root 5 is irrational.
